Moxie Memorizers

Saturday, January 15, 2011  ::

The response to Moxie Memorizers has been so exciting for me. About 40 people have responded and I'm sure there are a few who are joining that haven't spoken up yet. Thanks to all of you for being excited about this with me. I wholeheartedly believe this is going to be life transformational for us.

One of the main reasons I'm excited is because of the personal responsibility this will require. If you are mentored, your mentor is part of your growth process. Sundays bring teaching from someone else that has studied the depths of a passage. Conferences and bible studies also rely on others to help bring personal growth into your life. All of these are great tools that God has designed to help us grow in our knowledge and understanding of him, but memorizing scripture is up to you. I can't memorize your verse for you, your mentor can't, your pastor can't, your accountability partner can't... It is up to you. You will have to take the personal responsibility to write down the verses, study them, review them, and learn them. But, good news! I can promise that the Holy Spirit is going to be your Great Helper! You will spend time the to ask Him to write these verses on your heart. You have to take personal responsibility, but it is through his anointing and strength that your life will be transformed. You can't change your own life through scripture memory, but you can put the verses in your heart and mind and allow Him to work his amazing grace. Pretty awesome, don't ya think?

I chose my first verse of the year as a verse of hope. I'm truly hoping God is doing a new thing in my life and in Second Mile this year. I'm asking for it.

The second verse was very exciting for me because it says his eyes are on us when we fear him and hope in his love. Usually, we hear people say, "Keep your eyes on Jesus." That is a great thing to do, but I'm much more excited about his eyes being on me because there are times that I feel like I'm in a famine need his deliverance.

To comment leave your name, verse, and translation to let us know what verses you are doing for January:

Angel Is 43:19 See, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs up! Do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. NIV

Ps 33:18-19 The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in the famine. NIV

Because our group is small-ish feel free to add anything to the comment you want. I'm always interested in things you have to say about this process. Several guys have mentioned that they read my blog and some are memorizing verses, too. Don't be shy guys. We love to hear from you. This isn't a woman only blog. If it was, I would have chosen a pink background. Lead out, gentlemen!

It is going to be great reading all the comments for the next few days! Let's hear what your working on. And, it is never too late to join in the fun! If you haven't signed up yet, just jump right on in!

Galatians 1:10
Am I now trying to win the apporval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. ESV
-One of my lies I believe is that I have to please everyone and need everyone approval before I make a decision. This has made decision making very stressful and not centered on the Lord but on everyone else. I am praying that by memorizing this verse that when I make decisions, the Holy Spirit will be the first voice I hear and not the voices of others.

First of all then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intersessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

My two verses are both significant to the month of January. The first because in seeking God and preparing for the week of P&F I have decided that working out is an idol right now, and I will be fasting from that. So hiding this verse in my heart will help me. And the second is a verse I should've memorized last Jan, when Chad challenged us with it. But better late than never.
1 Timothy 4:8 (NIV)
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

Hosea 10:12 (NIV)

hay this is Melissa Montague
My bible is NIV
Psalms 33:18-19
But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those who's hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

I wish I could read this in the original language because some times I wonder if fear is what it's trying to say or if it's more like respect or something along those lines.

oh so were supposed to pick our own verses??? in that case
NIV Jeremiah 29:11-13
"For I know the plans I have made for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Thanks for keeping us accountable Angel in posting this blog. With everything that has gone on in the past week, I just forgot about it. But thankful for this amazing group of women who are committed in doing this together. Reading everyone's verses has been so encouraging and I can't wait to see what God does with us through Moxie Memorizers...

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NASB) - "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit."

Zephaniah 3:17 (NASB) - "The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy."

I know these are long, but I can do it :)

Hebrews 12:11-13 ESV
"For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed."

Romans 12:9-13: NLT
"Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality."

Romans 15:13 (NIV)
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Several weeks ago, Chad refered the Jeremiah verse in his message and it struck a cord in me--I knew that it was a verse to start this year. The verse from Romans is just good. :)

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight"-1 peter 3:3-4 NIV

1 Peter 1:13-16
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."(ESV)

Isaiah 30:15
For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, "In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength." But you were unwilling (ESV)

The verses in 1 Peter struck a cord with me after Chad's message on Sunday and I consider my "former ignorance" the sin of my pride (which I thought was insecurity). I didn't realize how pride manifested itself in other "titles," and now that my mind has been awakened to my sins I want to choose to be sober-minded and prepare "my mind for action" instead of allowing my pride to succumb God's words in each moment of my life.

I chose the verse from Isaiah because it talks about resting and returning to God. God chose to rest while he was creating the world, so why shouldn't I have a day of rest in my week? It's not easy for me to feel at ease with resting without feeling like I'm being lazy or unproductive. But I know it's important and I'm going to find my rest in God this semester.

Philipians 2:1-4
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ESV

Hosea 10:12

Hosea 10:12 (ESV) I won’t retype it here because so many people are also doing this one.

2 Tim 2:15 (ESV) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

I am memorizing the first one because I should have done it a long time ago and never did. The second one is because I'm struggling with laziness lately.

Proverbs 10:19 NIV "When words are many sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise."

Colossians 3:12-15 ESV "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another, and if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive."

Isaiah 30:15 (ESV)
For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, "In returning and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and in strength shall be your strength." But you were unwilling.

Isaiah 50:4
The sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.

I chose the first verse for much of the same reasons Erin C chose it. I am very unwilling to rest most of the time and need to realize that this is the time when I will be built up and refreshed by the Lord to do his will.
The second verse I tried memorizing awhile ago and I wanted to actually write it on my heart. I feel like it is a verse that starts off the year by seeking to know God's Word and to remember each morning that He is who I am living for and then to actually listen and learn (something that has been challenging to me lately).

Thank you for the accountability. Love you all

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength.
Mark 12:30

You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so complex. Your workmanship is marvelous-how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark. You saw me before I was born. Everyday of my life was recorded in your book. Heather T -
I know these are kind-of long but I really want to have the whole context. The first passage is my prayer for myself and for ALL of us at 2M - to discern the BEST that God has for us, and steadily approach maturity in Him. The second one reminds me of the seriousness of speaking words from scripture, that an ear sensitive to the Spirit's nudging is essential to prevent my own worldy wisdom from spewing out.

Philippians 1:9-11 NIV
And this is my prayer: that you love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10-13
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

Psalm 27:13 "I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living."

I have been trying to memorize these for a while, so I guess now is a good time to officially get it right :) The first is a reminder to be humble and teachable. The second is a verse of hope- not only that God is doing good things but also that I need to keep my eyes open, expect them, and participate in the goodness He brings here.

It's so awesome to see so many comments here!

Micah 6:8 (NIV)
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

The verse in Micah helps me refocus and brings me some peace in that it boils all the complicated decisions and conflicting expectations and pressures of life down to a couple, simple things that God asks of us. The 2 Timothy verse is because I often find myself being timid or fearful in the face of people/situations where those feelings keep me from speaking or acting when I should, and I don't want my own selfishness or fear of awkwardness to get in the way of what God is doing or wanting to do.

Hebrews 10:39 - But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.

Jeremiah 11-14 - For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me. When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

So Im a little late in the game in picking my verses (that last one may have to roll over to next month), but now that I've seen all the verses everyone else is doing I have a whole list of ones to choose from going forward!
