Moxie Memorizers

Wednesday, August 15, 2012  ::

I often have "Angel moments" when I'm completely engrossed in thought and forget what I'm supposed to be doing.

Sometimes while I'm instructing my spinning classes we will be in a simulated heavy uphill climb and I'll start daydreaming and forget to tell the class to take a break.

Sometimes I'll make tortillas and put in baking soda instead of baking powder. That does not work, friends. It's actually pretty gross.

Sometimes I'll be driving across town to a meeting and be reviewing my memory pack and get so involved in a particular passage, get all choked up, and drive a couple of city blocks passed my destination. Today, Titus 3:1-11 did that for me. Oh man. So good.  Thankfully, I was only a few minutes late to my meeting.

Are you reviewing? I hope so. Not to sound extreme, but unless you are one of those amazing people who remember everything forever, you will probably forget your verses unless you review at least two times a week. I go through my packet 3-5 days a week depending on attitude and time.  Sometimes my attitude is lazy and stinky so I ignore the very thing that can revive my mopey spirit.

You've heard my say over and over....review, review, review. This isn't the post with some fantastic new idea. This post is a friendly reminder to not forget what you've already learned.

Over the next couple of weeks I will memorize Colossians 2:6-7 to add on to verse 8 that I memorized a few years ago.

Colossians 2:6-7
So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

The next verse goes on to talk about not being taken captive by a humanistic world view. I'm adding verses six and seven because without being rooted in Christ and continuously walking with Him, I have no sure footing to avoid my brain being tricked into thinking the way the world thinks. Since Kyle and Esther are at the age where they are hearing a lot of interesting opinions and thoughts in school, they will also be memorizing this passage with me.

Post your verses, friends. Thanks to all of you who jumped back in the game last time around! It encouraged me greatly! I'm so thankful to be growing in my knowledge of God with each of you.

As I was making my way over to your blog just now, I was thinking about how much Colossians 2:6-7 stuck out to me in my reading this week. Memorizing these two verses doesn't come at a better time than now. I'm glad to see that you are memorizing it as well. :)

I'm back in it! I spent the last two weeks catching up and am ready to start anew! I'm finished with 1 Peter 1 and will add a few shorter passages before I tackle another big chunk. This time it will be 2 For 3:17-18.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

I might add some of the verses before it later, but this is where I'll start.

I keep coming along soooooo many verses that I want to memorize, it's hard to choose. But for these weeks I will work on 2 corinthians 13:11 "Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you."

So excited to be in routine and my new system is working well for me!! Excited to continue to review it over the next couple of weeks and work on this one. Moving and being away from community hasn't been easy and I find myself drawn to scripture that reminds me to trust in where God has us :)

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV)
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

Jumping back in! Working my way through Psalm 51.

Psalm 51:1&2 (ESV)
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

I haven't been as diligent with really getting my last three verses down great. So I'm going to spend the next two weeks getting these ones solid before I move on. It seems that summer kicks my butt out of routine and I slack with memorizing (happened last year too). So, I'm hoping I can get back into a better routine with memorizing. Here are the verses:

Colossians 3:12-14
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

I confess that I have not been good about memorizing scripture. This morning during my prayer time, though, I was filled with a passion for myself to stop making excuses for God's word. "God didn't really mean..." I want us - I want myself - to humbly accept the word planted in us (James 1:21)! What if we (I) trusted more in God's character and His word than the confusing messages that culture gives? I understand clearly what this means - I understand how hateful that sounds to a culture who has not known God or the context of His loving commands. But I want to take a stand, and I want the Western church to take a stand - to drink God's word in as if every drop were true. Let us not read the Word in the context of our lives, but to live our lives in the context of the Word. I raise my hand first and foremost in acknowledging my guilt in this! And honestly, the ensuing few weeks probably call for a lot of review in the Word, taking those verses and holding them up against my life, soaking in them and truly taking them to heart in a way I have not yet done. But I think this journey will be a very good time. Perhaps as I review, I will post repeats that have really dwelt with me.

Thinking lots about nationality, culture, and fitting in lately...

Philippians 3:20, ESV
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

A few days late, but after this week and some contemplation I am memorizing a verse about how we speak to one another, I have had a lot o harsh words this week.

Ephesians 4: 29-32
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

better late then never! I've been working on these verses but forgot to post all this month! these verses have been especially comforting with some tough stuff thats been going on

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
